Mavericks Defeat #1 Kentucky Bisons In Season's Opener

November 20, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

Beaumont, TX. The ABA Southeast Texax Mavericks held off the Kentucky Bisons at the ABA Tip-Off Classic in their rematch from last season's ABA Finals matchup where the Bisons came from behind to defeat the Mavericks in the semi-final game. It was not to be on this opening night of the ABA season though. The Mavericks led by as many as 17 points midway through the third quarter, but the defending ABA Champs fought back to cut the Mavs lead to one point with less than 30 seconds to play in the game. Mavericks guard Lamar Castile hit one of two free throws with 7.2 seconds left on the game clock and Mike Wells 3-pointer at the buzzer fell just short and the Mavericks held on for a two point win, 91-89.

Forward Josh Pace led the Mavs with 27 points, Castile finished with 16 while Mike Crain and Anthony Lumpkin added 14 and 13 respecfully. Reigning ABA MVP DeRon Rutledge chipped in 10 while Mavs centger Jon Rogers pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked 6 shots.

The Mavericks will face the Music City Stars, who defeated the Bluegrass Stallions in the opening game of the Tip-Off Classic on Thursday night at Ford Arena in Baumont. The Mavs and Stars will meet in the Tip-Off Classic Championship Game on Saturday night at 8:30pm while the Bisons will play the Stallions in the consolation game at 6pm.
