Maulers to open training camp with 36 players
The Montgomery Maulers will open training camp this weekend with 36 players fighting for 24 roster spots. Head coach James Shiver will have two weeks to trim his roster to 21 active players plus a three-man practice squad.
The range of professional football experience in the group includes three players with NFL experience (RB Chrys Chukwuma of Dallas Cowboys, WR Mareno Philyaw of Atlanta Falcons and DL Robert Malone of Baltimore Ravens), one with NFL Europe experience (QB Jeff Aaron with Berlin Thunder), one with CFL experience (Philyaw with Saskatchewan Roughriders), two who played in the XFL (Chukwuma with Las Vegas Outlaws and DB Eric Sloan with Birmingham Bolts) and 12 players with indoor pro football experience (AFL, af2 or NIFL).
The Maulers feature a trio of super sized players as three linemen top the scales at over 300 pounds (Fred Barnett 66, 330 lbs., Toray Hicks 63, 350 lbs., and Duke Vaiga 64, 375 lbs.).
Among the local connections are ten former Trojans from Troy State, nine former players from Alabama State, and one from Tuskegee University. Sixteen of the players on the training camp roster have played at one time or another with the Central Alabama Renegades of the NAFL. Their head coach with the Renegades was current Maulers assistant coach Clif Clark.
The players will undergo preseason physicals on Friday, February 25 before a day of meetings on Saturday and the first practice session on Sunday, February 27. The Maulers open their inaugural season on Saturday, March 19 in Kissimmee, FL.
An expansion franchise in the National Indoor Football League (NIFL), the Montgomery Maulers offer seven nights of hard-hitting, high-scoring, edge of your seat excitement at historic Garrett Coliseum. The first home game is Saturday, April 2 against the SW Louisiana Swashbucklers. Season tickets start at $49 and are available by calling (334) 277-1881, visiting the Maulers office at Eastdale Mall, or logging on to montgomerymaulers.com.
