
Maulers Strike It Rich Against Drillers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. âThe Montgomery Maulers claimed first place of the Central Division in the Atlantic Conference with their 53-46 win over the Beaumont Drillers Sunday afternoon.
Defensive back David Philyaw was the hero of the game when he intercepted an Aubrey Jones' pass and returned it for 22 yards with 1:05 remaining in the fourth quarter. Philyaw also deflected three additional passes and had three solo tackles.
Quarterback J.R. Richardson stepped it up big for the team as well as he had 18 completions in 25 attempts with two interceptions for 162 yards and three touchdowns. Richardson also had nine carries for 49 yards.
Also on offense, Shaun Holmes recorded seven receptions for 71 yards and one touchdown.
John Harrell also led the Maulers on defense when defense had a big day. Harrell had seven solo tackles, one tackle for a loss of six yards, a fumble recovery returned for 10 yards, and one interception.
For the Beaumont Drillers, Roland Hayes gained 48 yards in 17 carries and was the offensive leader with three touchdowns. Hayes also caught 2 passes for 27 yards and one touchdown.
Chris Stropolo, kicker for the Beaumont Drillers, set a Garrett Coliseum record as he kicked a field goal good for 55 yards with 3:07 remaining in the second quarter.
The Maulers have a bye-week next week due to schedule changes in the division, but will return to action when they play at home on June 4th against the Lakeland Thunderbolts.
