February 8, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Montgomery Bears News Release
Maulers coaches were pleased with last week's final pre-season tryout. The tryout was again held at Robert E. Lee High School with the assistance of some of the Lee coaches. Maulers assistant and Defensive Coordinator Carlos Clayton conducted the tryout.
Five players were signed to letters-of-intent to play for the Montgomery team and were invited to the pre-season camp. Those signed this week are Alan Thompson, Roger Medlock and Jerome Newton all of Montgomery, JP Holly of Millbrook and Ronnie Harper of Prattville. Holly was a high school and junior college standout quarterback. Harper played at Troy University as a wide receiver, defensive back and line backer. Newton was an outstanding track and football athlete at St Jude High School leading the state in receptions his junior year. Medlock has experience as a lineman at North Iowa College, Alabama State University and Pontiac Central High as well as semi-pro experience with the Waterford Warthogs. Thompson was "Best Defensive Back" in 2001 at Stillman College with three interceptions and thirty tackles and experience in punt and kick returns.
Coach Clayton said, "I'm excited about bringing these young men into camp. Each of them has the potential to contribute to this team." This brings to approximately 45 players that will start the 2006 pre-season camp. "We'll start with about 45", Clayton said, "But they best come in-shape and ready to work because we'll start cutting by the third or fourth practice".
The Maulers will cut down to a 25 man active roster by the first game on March 25. February 26 will be the first official meeting of the players and coaches. The NIFL allows only 14 practices before a teams first game. The practice schedule will be set at the February 26 meeting.
Season tickets are on sale at the Montgomery Maulers Eastdale Mall office and 2006 season schedules are available to be picked up.
