Colorado Rapids News Release
The Colorado Rapids have waived goalkeeper Matt Pickens, parting ways after five seasons in Colorado. Pickens is no longer on the Rapids' roster and is free to sign with other clubs.
"We want to thank Matt for all his contributions to our club in his five seasons here," said Paul Bravo, the Rapids Vice President of Soccer Operations and Technical Director.
"He has handled this difficult situation with professionalism and we wish him all the best moving forward in his career, as he will always hold a special place in Rapids history. This move allows us additional flexibility on our roster, and gives Matt a chance to find a new club soon."
"Matt was a great player on the field for the Rapids, but he also gave a lot of his time and energy to our community," said Rapids President Tim Hinchey. "He worked closely with the athletes of Special Olympics Colorado, spent his free time helping a number of local charities, and made strong connections with our fans and supporters. We'll be rooting for him as he takes the next step in his career."
Pickens, 32, came to the Rapids in 2009 and played 116 matches for the club (all starts), holding franchise records in career games played (among goalkeepers), shutouts, and wins. He started two matches in 2013 before suffering a broken arm, missing the bulk of the season and backing up Clint Irwin after his return from injury. In his MLS career with Colorado and Chicago, Pickens has played 156 games (154 starts), keeping 40 shutouts.
The Rapids will hold their Home Opener this Saturday, March 22 at 4 p.m. at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, against Portland Timbers FC.
