Preview
Sky Blue FC is eighth place with a record of 4-12-4 and 16 points, nine points behind 7th place Washington Spirit. The Red Stars sit in third place with a record of 11-8-2 and 35 points and are in a tight race for a playoff spot. Sky Blue has won both matches this season against the Red Stars by a 2-1 scoreline.
Leading the attack for Sky Blue is Carli Lloyd with five goals and one assist followed by Raquel Rodriguez with three goals and two assists. In previous matchups against the Red Stars, Paige Monaghan, Jen Hoy, and Kailen Sheridan helped lead the team to victory. Monaghan scored her first career goal and brace against the Red Stars on August 14th to earn Sky Blue the stoppage time win. Hoy sealed the win for Sky Blue back on July 7th after netting the winning goal in the 81st minute. Sheridan has earned 12 saves between the two games against Chicago, stopping Sam Kerr multiple times on the attack. Sheridan currently leads the NWSL in saves with a total of 70.
Opponent
The Red Stars are coming off a 1-0 win in stoppage time against the Orlando Pride thanks to a cross sent in by Kerr that found the head of Casey Short. Chicago dropped three straight games from August 14th to August 25th, conceding seven goals, but recently have found their form again after winning back to back games against Houston and Orlando.
Sam Kerr is looking to beat the NWSL single-season scoring record (17 goals) that she set back in 2017 playing for Sky Blue. Kerr currently leads the league with 15 goals and three assists. Another key player to watch is Yuki Nagasato who leads the NWSL in assists with six. The most dangerous combination on the field is the international connection between Kerr and Nagasato. Five of Nagasato's assists this season have led to Kerr finding the back of the net.
