This will be the first ever meeting between Republic FC and the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros. Both clubs come into the match in form with Republic FC on a six-match unbeaten streak and the Toros losing just one of their last eight matches.
Most recently, Republic FC won consecutive matches over Real Monarchs SLC earning a 1-0 victory at Bonney Field on June 8 before completing the two-match sweep with a 2-1 win at Greater Nevada Field in Reno, Nev. on June 11.
Loan player and forward Adam Jahn scored in both matches against the Monarchs, with both goals serving as the match-winning goal. Jahn has now scored two goals in six appearances for Republic FC this season. Jahn is the first Republic FC player to score a goal in back-to-back matches since Justin Braun scored against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Sept. 9, 2015, and Portland Timbers 2 on Sept. 12, 2015.
Cameron Iwasa scored the first of Republic FC's two goals against the Monarchs on June 11. The goal was his club-leading third goal of the season. Iwasa had seen increased playing time this season having played 852 minutes so far this season compared to 564 minutes in the 2015 season. He has responded to the increased playing time by tripling his goal scoring output scoring three goals this season compared to a single goal in 2015.
Republic FC's offense has dramatically improved during their recent six-match unbeaten streak. In the six-match stretch Republic FC has scored 10 goals, quintupling their output from the previous six matches.
The Toros enter the match after a commanding 3-0 win over Oklahoma City Energy FC on June 11. The win was a bounce back from a 0-4 loss to Swope Park Rangers KC on June 8. The Toros have been strong on the road this season with a 3-2-3 record on the road, earning 12 of their 22 points this season on the road.
Midfielder Jose "Memo" Rodriguez leads the Toros offensively. His three goals ties for the club lead, while his two assists is tied for second on the club. Rodriguez's eight points leads the Toros. Rodriguez is a Homegrown Player for the Toros' affiliate club, the Houston Dynamo.
The Toros will be without one of their best offensive threats on Saturday, with midfielder Jose Escalante serving a one-match suspension after receiving a red card against Energy FC on June 11. Escalante is tied for the club lead with three goals this season and is second on the club in points with seven. Midfielder Jorginho James will also be suspended for the match after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against Energy FC on June 11.
Republic FC will be hosting a used soccer equipment drive at the match benefiting Second Touch Soccer, a local non-profit that supplies soccer equipment to those who cannot afford it. Fans are encouraged to bring their new and gently used soccer equipment such as soccer clothes, balls, cleats, shin guards, etc. to the match. Collection bins will be located in front of the West Gate at Bonney Field.
