Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA, ON - The battle for the Canadian Championship continues Wednesday night at TD Place with Fury FC looking to advance to the semifinals and a date with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Last Wednesday Fury FC delivered their most convincing performance of the season in the first leg of the preliminary round of the Amway Canadian Championship in Edmonton. A 3-0 decision was not only Ottawa's first-ever victory in the competition, but a win that gives them a sizeable advantage heading into the second leg.
While the excitement to host MLS side Vancouver in the semifinals percolates, head coach Paul Dalglish says there is still plenty of work to be done.
"We are really motivated to try to bring the Vancouver Whitecaps here, but we have to take care of business at hand first."
"This tie is far from over, but we are not sitting back. We are going out to win this leg as well," added Dalglish. "We don't ever want to sit back and protect a lead. We want to go out and dominate every game we play. It's 0-0 as far as I'm concerned and we're going out to win this one as well."
Ottawa enters Wednesday's game with plenty of confidence not only because they carry a 3-0 lead into the return leg, but also because of their recent success. Dalglish's side is undefeated in its last three games overall with a record of 2W-1D-0L, outscoring the opposition 7-2. Not to mention the fact that Fury FC haven't dropped a decision at home since August of last year.
For Canadian forward Carl Haworth, who was dominant in Edmonton scoring his first goal in 2016, the return leg is crucial for club's history as Fury FC have the chance to punch their ticket to the semifinal stage and eliminate Canadian rivals FC Edmonton in the process.
"We've lost to Edmonton a couple of times now and it was something the organization and the staff put a lot of emphasis on this year," said Haworth. "We want to do well this year and go test ourselves against the Vancouver Whitecaps. It's going to be important for us to not take our foot of the gas. 3-0 is a good lead but it's a tricky lead at the same time so we have to have the right mindset going into this one."
