FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton (0-0-1) will look to make history as they face a three-goal deficit heading into the second leg of the Amway Canadian Championship (ACC) versus Canadian rival Ottawa Fury FC (1-0-0). The Eddies will make their first trip of 2016 to TD Place when the match gets underway at 5:30 p.m. MT on May 18.
The Eddies came undone last Wednesday against Fury FC, conceding an unusually large amount of goals after three straight standout performances in North American Soccer League (NASL) play. The team's jam-packed May schedule appeared to play a role, as the team was never fully able to get their legs underneath them before going down a goal.
The Fury's 3-0 win was their first ever in the annual Canadian tournament and has them positioned well to move ahead in the competition if they are able to once again replicate their May 11 performance against the Eddies. Scoring for the Fury was spread out throughout the lineup in last week's victory, with Timbó, Chris Haworth and Idan Vered collecting goals. Between the woodwork, Marcel DeBellis earned the clean sheet on net after a three-save performance.
The team with the highest aggregate through the two-leg preliminary round moves on to face Major League Soccer's (MLS) Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the tournament semifinals, with away goals counting as the tiebreaker. Edmonton has never failed to qualify for the semifinal round.
"It will be a very positive team that is put out tomorrow," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller stated. "It will be an aggressive, attack-minded side and we will look to try and get a result here. We'll start with one goal and then we'll try and build on that. We can't look at scoring four goals, we have to look at trying to get the first one and certainly not defend as poorly as we did against Ottawa last Wednesday."
Ottawa Fury FC welcome FC Edmonton to TD Place for the second leg of the Amway Canadian Championship, May 18. Kick off in the match is set for 5:30 p.m. The match will be streamed live on www.canadasoccer.com.
