Match Notes: San Antonio Scorpions vs Ottawa Fury FC
September 4, 2015 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Friday, September 4, 2015) - The red hot Ottawa Fury head into San Antonio hoping to extend their lead atop the Fall Season standings. The Fury have combined a stout defense and strong set pieces to create a winning formula. The Scorpions, meanwhile, are coming off back-to-back shutouts against the Jacksonville Armada thanks to strong play of their own from the backline and goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes.
Since switching to the 5-4-1 lineup, San Antonio has given up only two goals in three games after giving up 10 goals in the three matches prior to the tactical shift. The win and draw in recent weeks have kept the Scorpions well within reach of a playoff spot as they are only six points out of fourth place (and the final slot in The Championship) with a game in hand on the rest of the league.
The Scorpions tout a potent attacking front four with Omar Cummings, Marvin Chavez, Billy Forbes, and Cesar Elizondo, who have combined for 17 of the club's 26 goals in 2015. Nine different players from both teams have scored the nine combined goals in this series, with Eric Hassli and Castillo being the only two current Scorpions to have scored in the matchup.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night and the game can be seen on ESPN3.com.
By the Numbers:
This is the fifth all-time meeting between San Antonio and the Canadian side Ottawa Fury FC. The Alamo City Boys have never lost to the Fury, with their overall record currently at 1-3-0. The Scorpions earned the win the first time that these two clubs met in a wild 3-2 victory in Ottawa, but the following three meetings have resulted in draws. The most recent meeting was in San Antonio during the 2015 NASL Spring Season, and it resulted in a 0-0 draw.
