San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Friday, September 18, 2015) - Last weekend, the Scorpions finished off their three-game homestand with a 2-0 shutout win against Indy Eleven. The result gives them 25 points in the combined standings, and puts them only five points behind the fifth place Tampa Bay Rowdies.
The Rowdies have been hot at home this season with an overall record of 7-1-3 in 2015. Their most recent home match was a 2-0 win over the NASL Spring Season Champion New York Cosmos. The last time these two sides met - July 11th at Toyota Field - San Antonio pitched a 3-0 shutout with striker Omar Cummings picking up a brace.
Scorpions midfielder Rafael Castillo is rolling offensively and was recognized for his spike in form with NASL Player of the Week honors for fall week 11. In the last two games, he has scored three goals in addition to being the midfield lynchpin on both ends of the pitch for the Alamo City boys. He has already tied his regular season scoring tally from 2014 and his seven goals put him in a five-way tie for fifth in the race for the golden boot.
He sits just three goals behind the Scorpions' leading scorer, Cummings. Cummings has not found the back of the net since August 8th in a 3-3 draw with the Atlanta Silverbacks, but Cummings has scored three goals in the previous two games against the Rowdies this year.
Billy Forbes, though he missed a game last week to end his consecutive appearance streak at 42 straight games, has been valuable off the bench setting up teammates this season. In the win over Indy Eleven, he provided the assist on Castillo's second goal of the night. That gave him seven assists on the season, which ties his total from 2014 that led the NASL. This year, however, Forbes is still chasing Tampa's Georgi Hirstov, who leads the league with nine.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Central on Saturday night and the game can be seen locally in the San Antonio area on KSAT 12.2 MeTV or streamed online via on ESPN3.
By the Numbers:
The San Antonio Scorpions have played the Tampa Bay Rowdies 13 times in franchise history, and they hold the slight lead over the Florida side with a 7-0-6 overall record. In the past five meetings, San Antonio has outscored Tampa 13-4 and in those five games, the Scorpions recorded three shutout wins.
The Scorpions have only scored eight goals in St. Petersburg, while in contrast they have scored 21 goals at home against the Rowdies.
