Mason named AFL's Defensive Player of the Week
May 18, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Grand Rapids Rampage News Release
Grand Rapids Rampage defensive specialist Damon Mason was named the AFL's ADT Defensive Player of the Week following his best game of the 2005 season in the Rampage's 51-40 upset of the Chicago Rush last Sunday. Mason finished the game with 7.5 stops, four pass breakups and an interception.
Three of his four breakups were in the endzone that prevented Rush touchdowns. His interception stopped a fourth potential Chicago TD, which helped the Rampage jump to a 38-12 lead before the Rush made a late-game comeback.
This marks the second time this season and second time in his career that Mason has earned AFL ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors. The previous time was after an 11 tackle, two pass breakup and an interception effort in the Orlando Predators 39-36 win over the Colorado Crush in Week One.
Mason is currently second in the AFL in total tackles (116.5) and pass breakups (26). He can finished first in both categories if he has 3.5 more stops than Colorado's Rashad Floyd and three more breakups than Tampa Bay's Jonathan Ordway this weekend.
When he takes the field on Saturday against the Los Angeles Avengers, Mason will become the first player in AFL history to play in 17 regular season games in back-to-back seasons thanks to moving teams each season before the second team had their bye week.
This becomes the second time in team history that a Rampage player has been honored as the AFL Defensive Player of the Week. The first was in the Rampage's lone win of the 2004 season at Detroit when Mark Ricks earned the distinction after sealing the Grand Rapids win with an interception of Fury QB Andy Kelly at the end of the game.
