MASL Weekly - Week 17
February 18, 2015 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) News Release
Silver Knights Rise As Eastern Threat, Comets on Verge of Perfection
2/18/15 - The Syracuse Silver Knights, on the back of two impressive road wins, have emerged as a dark horse in the Eastrern Conference, which is composed of the Eastern and Central Divisions.
The Missouri Comets are the consensus top ranked team with a 19-0 record and only the 4-14 Tacoma Stars standing in the way of a perfect regular season. The Comets would join the San Diego Sockers (2011/12) and Chicago Mustangs (2013/14) as the only teams in league history to go undefeated, but the first since the league expanded the regular season from 16 to 20 games.
But after the Comets and Baltimore Blast (14-2 after dropping two of their last three), the Silver Knights are quietly on a roll. Syracuse improved to 10-7 after road wins at the Milwaukee Wave and Chicago Mustangs who were a combined 13-4 at home before last weekend. The Silver Knights lost all four meetings with Baltimore, but take those games away and their record improves to 10-3. They are 9-4 overall since losing at Detroit on December 6.
Syracuse, who will face the Rochester Lancers in the first round of the playoffs, have three games remaining, all at home. If the Silver Knights can keep their momentum going they are on a collision course for another shot at the Blast in the division finals.
Playoffs!
The Silver Knights, Lancers, and Mustangs clinched the final three playoff spots last weekend and now the 12-team bracket is set. The Ron Newman Cup Playoffs begin February 26 and the four division winners have first round byes. The #2 and #3 seeds in each division will face off, with the winner traveling to meet the #1 seed. Here is the bracket:

Gibson Surges to Points, Assists Record
Leo Gibson of the Missouri Comets is rewriting the MASL record book. With one more regular season match left before the playoffs, Gibson has already set new league records for points, surpassing Kraig Chiles's 72 in 2012/13, and assists with 41, topping Enrique Tovar's 40 in 2013/14. This is the first season the MASL has played a 20-game schedule after playing 16 each of the first six years.
More Bad News for Chiles
The night before Kraig Chiles lost his league points record, his 63-game point scoring streak came to an end in an 8-5 loss to the Las Vegas Legends. It was the first time he didn't register either a goal or an assist in a game since November 19, 2011. Adding further insult to injury Chiles breached his penalty limit and will have to serve a one game suspension for accumulation.
Sockers Win in Pacific Coast
The San Diego Sockers wrapped up the Pacific Division title on Friday with a relatively easy 9-5 win at the Ontario Fury. The Fury could have won the division by winning their final two games, but the Sockers continued their unbeaten run against Ontario.
