Martinez scores four goals as Steamers win fourth in a row

The Steamers won their fourth consecutive game when they defeated the Philadelphia Kixx, 8-6 at Wachovia Spectrum Saturday night. St. Louis improves to 15-4 on the season and holds a one game lead on the Milwaukee Wave in the standings. The loss is the eighth in a row for Philadelphia, who dropped to 4-13.

Defender Genoni Martinez led the Steamers' offense with four goals, including the game-winner, and one assist. Shaun David (2 goals) and Carlos "Chile" Farias (1 goal, 1 assist) also had multi-point games for St. Louis.

Philadelphia put the first tally on the scoreboard when Pat Morris took a rebound of a shot by Kevin Sloan and put it in the net at 6:52 of the first quarter. St. Louis responded with a restart goal by Martinez, assisted by Carlos "Chile" Farias, at 12:51.

Less than a minute into the second quarter (:49), Philadelphia regained the lead (2-1) on a restart goal by Sloan, assisted by Don D'Ambra. The Steamers drew even (2-2) again on a goal by David, assisted by Sterling Wescott, at 4:50. St. Louis took a 3-2 lead on a goal by Farias, assisted by Martinez, at 6:14. St. Louis went up 4-2 on an unassisted tally by D.J. Newsom at 10:51. The Kixx made it 4-3 on a header by D'Ambra, assisted by Morris, at 13:39. St. Louis held a 4-2 lead at halftime.

Just 16 seconds into the second half, Philadelphia rookie Josh Rife scored to even the score at 4-4. Philadelphia goalkeeper Stuart Dobson was called for a two-minute tripping infraction inside the box and Martinez scored on the penalty kick to put the Steamers back on top, 5-4, at 4:23 of the third quarter. Philadelphia again knotted the game when D'Ambra scored on a feed from Dino Delevski at 12:56, and the third quarter expired with the score tied 5-5.

Martinez completed his hat trick with a shot into the corner of the net, with an assist by Jeff DiMaria, to regain the lead for the Steamers, 6-5, at 1:14 of the fourth quarter. Delevski tied the game 6-6 when he scored his first goal as a member of the Kixx, on a restart at 9:01. Delevski was signed by the Kixx on Thursday. The Steamers gained a man advantage when Philadelphia midfielder David Schofield was called on a tripping penalty. St. Louis regained the lead, 7-6, when Martinez scored his fourth goal of the match on the power play at 12:34. With Delevski serving as sixth attacker, David scored his second of the night, assisted by Mali Walton, at 13:20 to seal the win for St. Louis.

Steamers goalkeeper Brett Phillips faced 14 shots and made eight saves on his way to his 13th win of the season. Stuart Dobson took the loss in goal for Philadelphia, facing 18 shots and making 12 saves.

A total of 12 penalty minutes were called in the duel, with four going to the Steamers and eight to the Kixx. Twenty-nine fouls were called, with a dozen going to St. Louis while Philadelphia collected 17.

Steamers forward Joe Reiniger remains on the doorstep of his 600th career indoor soccer goal and could reach that milestone when the Steamers host the Baltimore Blast this Monday, February 20 at Savvis Center. Reiniger presently has 598 career indoor soccer goals. Due to the President's Day holiday, Monday's matchup kicks off at 4:35 p.m.

With a 9-0 record at Savvis Center, the Steamers are the only team in the MISL to remain undefeated at home and they will try to extend that streak when they battle the Blast Monday afternoon.
