Martinez Named Defender of the Year

(Westport, CT. – April 22, 2003) Harrisburg Heat defender Genoni Martinez is the 2002-03 Major Indoor Soccer League's Defender of the Year. The selection of Martinez was based on the votes submitted by members of the media, league-wide team management and coaches.

Martinez, a native of Mexico, began his indoor career with Wichita in the 1996-97 NPSL season and ended his first season with 112 points, which included 14 three-point goals, 20 two-point goals and 14 one-point goals. Martinez, 28, played in Wichita for three seasons and was named to the All NPSL Second Team for the 1998-99 season and the NPSL Third All-League Team in 1996-97 season. In 1999-00 Martinez began the season with Philadelphia and was subsequently traded to Detroit.

In the 2001-02 season, Martinez played in the WISL with Monterey LaRaza in Monterey, Mexico. After playing in Mexico for Heat Coach Erich Geyer, Genoni followed Geyer to Harrisburg for the 2002-03 MISL season where he became the MISL's top defenseman.

In the 2002-03 MISL regular season Martinez scored 77 points including six three-point goals, 20 two-point goals and 29 assists. His six three-point goals led the Heat. He also led the Heat in shots, (215). Martinez represented the Harrisburg Heat in the 2002-03 All-Star Game, it was his second appearance in the All-Star event, he played in the 1996-97 event as a Wichita Wing defender.

Martinez's 2002-03 season also included being named the MISL's Offensive Player of the Month for the month of December, his 88 blocks led the League and set a new Harrisburg Heat single-season record. To top off his great year Martinez has been named to the 2002-03 All MISL First Team.
