Montgomery Biscuits News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Ten. - J.D. Martin's (3-6) knuckleball flustered the Chattanooga Lookouts (28-18) all evening and propelled the Biscuits (21-25) to a season-best fifth-straight win, 8-1, on Wednesday night in the series opener at AT&T Field.
The Biscuits, who were playing in Chattanooga for the first time since Jonathan Rodriguez's heartbreaking walk-off home run in Game 5 of the 2017 North Division that denied Montgomery their first Southern League crown in a decade, got a superb start from the former Washington National that helped to ease the memories of the nightmarish ending to last season.
Martin was making his 10
th start for the Butter and Blue, and made it his best one yet, tossing seven innings of one-run ball, surrendering just three hits and five walks to go along with three strikeouts.
The 35-year-old righty got some early offensive help from Biscuits leadoff hitter Jake Cronenworth, who cranked his first home run of the season over everything in right field in the first at-bat of the game against MLB rehabber Ervin Santana (0-1) to put Montgomery up 1-0.
An inning later, Biscuits catcher Mac James poked an RBI-single into left that scored Ryan Boldt to double that lead to 2-0. James went just 1-for-21 against Chattanooga in 2017, but began this season 2-for-2 against them with a pair of singles and the RBI.
In the fourth, Cronenworth delivered an RBI-single, and a throwing error by Lookouts second baseman Alex Perez brought two more across to make it a 5-0 game. Edgar Corcino's RBI-single in the bottom of the fourth scored Chattanooga's lone run.
The Biscuits tacked on a couple more in the eighth on Jermaine Palacios' two-run single, and Dalton Kelly's opposite-field RBI-double made it 8-, and Montgomery got a scoreless inning of relief from both Jordan Harrison and R.J. Alaniz.
The Biscuits will try to make it six in a row, and seven of eight, on Thursday when Genesis Cabrera (4-3) tangos with Kohl Stewart (3-1) at 6:15 PM CT.
The Biscuits will continue their current 10-game road trip until they return home to Montgomery on May 29 when the Jackson Generals will be in town for Wings Fest and the Gathering of Eagles Celebration. The series will also feature Country Music Night featuring a T-Shirt Giveaway presented by WLWI on Thursday, May 31, Gump in the Gump featuring Greenbow Biscuits Jersey Auction and MAX Fireworks on Friday, June 1, and Flight Night featuring a C-130 Figurine Giveaway presented by AUM and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, June 2.
