Utah Blaze News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - Jack Linebacker Antwan Marsh has agreed to terms on a new two-year contract, the Utah Blaze announced today. Marsh becomes the first player to be assigned to the 2013 roster after starting 12 games for the Blaze in 2012.
"Antwan is a versatile player that always seems to be around the football," Head Coach Ron James stated. "He adds game-changing ability not only to our defense, but to our special teams unit as well. We really wanted Antwan back because he brings the hard-working mentality we need on our team. As we strive to become a championship level program, we will continue to bring together those unselfish players that fit our style of play."
"I really enjoyed my time in Utah last year and this is a great opportunity for me," said Marsh. "I'm here because I want to finish what we started. We have unfinished business and hopefully we can get the rest of our team back and win a championship in 2013."
After beginning 2012 with the Orlando Predators, Marsh (6-3, 210, Pikeville) was claimed off of waivers by the Blaze midway through the season. He became an immediate starter and solidified the Jack Linebacker position over the final 12 games of the year. Marsh totaled 48 tackles (38 solos) and added six pass breakups, one interception and four fumble recoveries, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Equally explosive on special teams, Marsh also recovered two kickoffs off the net and returned one for a five-yard touchdown.
Marsh enters his fourth season in the Arena Football League after beginning his career with the Spokane Shock, where he played under current Utah Blaze Defensive Coordinator Rob Keefe. In two seasons with the Shock, Marsh registered 93 tackles, two tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, five interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
During his collegiate career, Marsh was a three-year starter at safety for Pikeville (Ky.) College. He was signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2006, but injuries plagued his two-year stint with the team. He later signed with the New York Giants, but failed a physical that voided his contract before entering the Arena Football League in 2010.
