Maroon Leads Adirondack To 5-3 Win In Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, NY - Patrick Maroon had two goals and one assist and was named the game's first star in his first game action since December 30th as the Adirondack Phantoms defeated the Binghamton Senators 5-3 Wednesday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Last Friday night in this very building, Adirondack scored just 22 seconds into the game on their first shot on goal. Tonight it was the Senators turn to get the early goal as Erik Condra slapped in a loose puck near the crease on a rebound at 1:49, assisted by Kaspars Daugavins and Josh Hennessy. The score remained 1-0 Binghamton for most of the period, but the Phantoms had a great final five minutes. After missing the last 12 games due to an injury suffered in Albany on December 30th, Patrick Maroon returned to action and immediately made his impact felt as he helped set up the tying goal. Maroon and Jon Matsumoto set up a Joey Mormina shot from the blue line and Maroon screened the goaltender as the puck eluded Chris Holt 14:47; it was Mormina's third goal of the year and was assist number 18 for both Matsumoto and Maroon. Then Adirondack grabbed the lead on a bizarre goal in the final minute of play. Andreas Nodl beat Daugavins to negate an icing call, but a clearing attempt by a Senators defenseman hit off the linesman and right out in front of the net to Stefan Legein who fired the puck into the net before Holt could even turn his attention back to the front of the goal. The unassisted goal was Legein's team-leading 19th of the year and came at 19:26 to give Adirondack a 2-1 lead.

The Phantoms dominated the second period, out-shooting Binghamton 14-4, out-scoring them 2-0 and chasing the Senators goaltender from the net. Maroon continued his dream return to the ice as he scored his fifth goal of the season at 1:46 to give Adirondack a 3-1 lead. On the power play Jason Ward took a clear slap shot from the point and Maroon tipped the puck at waist height down under the legs of Holt; Marc-Andre Bourdon got the second assist on the play. Maroon continued his superb second period by scoring again at 7:54, assisted by Matsumoto and David Laliberte, knocking home a rebound off a Binghaton turnover in the defensive zone. After the Phantoms' fourth goal, Binghamton replaced Holt with backup goalie Andy Chiodo and the move worked as Chiodo made some outstanding saves to keep the score at 4-1.

The Senators made a game of it in the third period by scoring a power play goal 91 seconds into the final frame when Craig Schira slotted home a rebound from the right side of the crease. Three minutes later it was 4-3 as Brandon Svendsen put a wrist shot over the blocker of Phantoms goaltender Johan Backlund after a turnover in the defensive zone. However, Backlund was the reason the Phantoms' lead held up in spite of a pile of Senators scoring chances. The Swedish netminder made perhaps his best save of the night at the nine minute mark when he used his left shoulder to deny B-Sens captain Denis Hamel's breakaway moments after he had stepped out of the penalty box. Binghamton had a late power play with three minutes remaining, but Adirondack killed it off and then David Laliberte scored an empty net goal from the blue line to ice the game 5-3.

Johan Backlund turned away 31-of-34 shots for his 13th win of the season and he was named the game's second start as the Phantoms improved to 21-20-2-1 on the year. Binghamton starter Chris Holt took the loss, allowing four goals on 18 shots in 27:54 of action; backup Andy Chiodo stopped all 21 shots he faced in 31:41 action as the Senators dropped to 19-19-3-1. Adirondack out-shot the B-Sens 40-34 in the game and went 1-for-3 on the power play; Binghamton was 1-for-7 with the man-advantage.

The Phantoms and Senators will play again on Friday, January 29th for a 7:30 pm face off at the Civic Center. Saturday, January 30th is Dollar Dog Night as Adirondack hosts the Norfolk Admirals for a 7:00 pm face off.
