
Marlins Sign Wolfpack Freshman Stone

Morehead City, N.C- The Morehead City Marlins are pleased to announce Brad Stone (North Carolina State University) will be joining the Marlins pitching staff for the 2013 season.
Stone was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 35th round of the 2012 First Year Player Draft, but instead opted to attend North Carolina State University. He has appeared in 13 games during his freshman campaign, including 11 starts, for the Wolfpack and is second on the pitching staff in strikeouts (50).
"We are thrilled to have a quality arm like Brad coming to Morehead City," Marlins head coach Jamie Sheetz said. "He is coming from one of the top programs in the country and we look forward to him having a great summer for us."
The Charlotte native was named to the North Carolina Coaches Association All-State team, All-Charlotte Observer team, and All-Southwestern 4-A Conference in 2012. He also played in the NC-SC All-Star Select Challenge. He finished his senior season at Ardrey Kell High School with a record of 6-2 and a 1.19 ERA. He struck out 86 batters in 53 innings of work.
The Marlins open their season on May 28 on the road against the Fayetteville Swampdogs. They return to Morehead City on May 29 for the home opener at Puck O'Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium against the Forest City Owls.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 57 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
