Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins are pleased to announce the signings of Stanford University pitchers Cal Quantrill, Tyler Thorne, Chris Viall and Griffin Weir.
Quantrill is 6-foot-3, 185 pound freshman, and already boasts an impressive resumé. Through May 22, 2014, Quantrill started 14 games for the Cardinal, recording a 3.20 ERA with 74 strikeouts in 84.1 innings. He was the Opening Day starter for Stanford in 2014, making him the freshman to start the school's season opener since former major leaguer Mike Mussina did so in 1988. Originally from Port Hope, Ontario, Quantrill pitched for Team Canada 18-U for three years, and tossed a perfect game in his high school's season opener as a senior. He was selected in the 26th round of the 2013 MLB Amateur Player Draft by the New York Yankees.
Thorne, a 6-foot-4, Lubbock, Texas native, joins the Marlins having just completed his freshman year. He split time as a reliever and starter for Stanford, appearing in 13 games out of the bullpen and starting another four. In his first two starts of the season, he threw 11 innings and allowed just one earned run. As a senior in high school at Lubbock Coronado, Thorne posted a 1.14 ERA and struck out 104 batters, earning several accolades, including 2013 All-South Plains Pitcher of the Year, 2013 Texas 5A All-State and 2013 District 2-5A First Team All-District honors.
Viall, a towering 6-foot-9, 230 pound right-hander, started seven games and made 15 overall appearances this season as of May 22, 2014, posting a 4.07 ERA and holding opponents to a .247 batting average. In those seven starts he did not allow an earned run, and became the first Stanford freshman to win his first collegiate start since 2012. Viall was a 36th round selection of the San Francisco Giants in the 2013 MLB Amateur Player Draft, following his senior year of high school during which he went 7-5 with a 1.45 ERA.
Weir is a 6-foot-4, 205 pound right-handed pitcher who just completed his freshman year after an impressive high school career at Amherst Steele High School. Weir went 7-2 with a 1.40 ERA as a senior, and holds a place in the school's top ten lists for career wins, strikeouts, hits and RBI. Through May 22, 2014, Weir appeared in 10 games and recorded a 4.15 ERA in 8.2 innings.
The Marlins' first regular season home game will be on May 28 at 7.05 p.m. against the Fayetteville Swampdogs.
