Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C.- The Morehead City Marlins have announced the signing of Stony Brook University sophomore Johnny Caputo. He was drafted in the 12th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft by the Oakland Athletics following his senior year of high school at Crescent School in Toronto.

Caputo started all 59 games for the Seawolves as a freshman in 2013. He primarily played third base and hit .271 with 10 doubles and 20 RBI. Following the season he was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team and was second team all-conference in the America East. The 6'2 205 pound Caputo was also on the America East Championship All-Tournament Team after he went 5 for 10 over three games in the tournament.

In high school, Caputo represented Team Canada when they qualified for the World Junior Championships. He is a solid defender, finishing with a .947 fielding percentage in 2013 with Stony Brook and can play multiple positions. He compares his style of play to Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays. "I am mostly a gap to gap hitter with a little pop" said Caputo. "I pride myself on my work ethic and preparation." Caputo played the 2013 summer season with the Danbury Westerners of the NECBL. He hit .252 with 14 RBI in 35 games.

The Marlins open the 2014 season on the road against the Fayetteville Swampdogs on May 27th. The home opener is the following night, May 28th, when they again take on the Swampdogs. Season tickets and flex books are on sale now at www.mhcmarlins.com and at the Marlins Team Store, located at 508-D Evans Street in Morehead City.
