Morehead City, N.C- The Morehead City Marlins announced on Friday that Jamie Sheetz will lead the team on the field in 2013. Sheetz currently serves as an assistant coach for Missouri State University.
"I'm very excited to be joining a quality organization like the Morehead City Marlins and the Coastal Plain League," Sheetz said. "I'm grateful to Buddy for the opportunity to work with our players and staff to put a quality product on the field that the fans of Morehead City will enjoy watching and being part of."
Sheetz will bring a wealth of baseball experience to Morehead City this summer, including two decades of amateur instruction. Sheetz enters his fifth season as an assistant at Missouri State. His teams have produced seven All-Americans, as well as numerous MLB draft picks. In addition to his work at the collegiate level, Sheetz has over ten years of experience coaching high school baseball. In all, 25 high school players have gone on to play collegiate baseball and/or sign pro contracts.
Sheetz is no stranger to collegiate summer league baseball. In 2008, Sheetz was an assistant coach with the Madison Mallards of the Northwoods League, where they finished runner-up in the Northwoods League Championship Series.
"I'm looking forward to experiencing a great summer of high-energy baseball with the Morehead City community, our host families, and the Marlins staff and players," Sheetz said.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 57 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
