Marlins Ink Vanderbilt's Tyler Campbell

February 4, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C.- Tyler Campbell, an infielder at Vanderbilt University, has been added to the Morehead City Marlins 2014 roster. Campbell is in his sophomore season for the Commodores, who begin the season ranked ninth in the country by Collegiate Baseball. As a freshman in 2013, Campbell appeared in 12 games, finishing with a .313 batting average and three runs scored. He doubled against Long Beach State in his first collegiate at-bat.

Campbell hails from Portland, Oregon and attended Lake Oswego High School. While there, he was a three time All-State selection and was named Player of the Year in his league as a senior in 2012. His team also won league titles in each of his four years as a varsity player.

Campbell's versatility will help him see the field more as a sophomore. Vanderbilt's coaching staff expects him to be a contributor on a team with national title aspirations.

Drew Fann, Vanderbilt's Director of Baseball Operations, said "This spring we expect him to be a utility guy for us. His versatility and ability to play three infield spots, as well as hit at the top or bottom of the order, is very valuable to us. Tyler is a great kid and a very hard worker."

The Marlins open the 2014 season on the road against the Fayetteville Swampdogs on May 27th. The home opener is the following night, May 28th, when they again take on the Swampdogs. Season tickets and flex books are on sale now at www.mhcmarlins.com and at the Marlins Team Store, located at 508-D Evans Street in Morehead City.

The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,100 alumni drafted and 65 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
