Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C.- Sam Delaplane and Charlie Land, both pitchers for Eastern Michigan University, have signed with the Morehead City Marlins for the 2014 season. Delaplane, a freshman from San Jose, California, and Land, a junior from Wheat Ridge, Colorado, are in their first season with the Eagles. The Marlins continue their relationship with Eastern Michigan University, after having Sam Ott as a member of the team in 2012 and 2013. Ott is the all-time leader in franchise history for games played, at-bats, and doubles.

Delaplane, a 6'0 175-pound right-hander, is expected to compete for a starting rotation spot for the Eagles after being named all-league his senior year of high school. He pitched 67 innings and went 6-2 with a 1.66 ERA while throwing four complete games. Eagles head coach Jay Alexander said "Sam is an advanced pitcher. He has excellent command and a phenomenal breaking ball." Delaplane made his collegiate debut at 16th ranked Clemson on February 16th, throwing a scoreless inning in relief. He had a 3.86 GPA in high school and plans to major in business at Eastern Michigan.

Land, a 6'3 180-pound right-hander, is a transfer from Mesa Community College. While there, he attained the single season and career save records. In 2012, he had 12 saves and a 1.95 ERA. The following season, he recorded seven saves. Coach Alexander said "Charlie is a very polished product. He has an excellent arm, locates three pitches for strikes, and relishes pitching in pressure situations." Land made two appearances out of the bullpen in the Eagles opening series at Clemson. He threw four innings, allowing two hits and zero earned runs, while striking out three. Land received all-conference honors in football, basketball, and baseball as a high school junior and senior at Wheat Ridge High School. He is a General Business major at Eastern Michigan.

The Marlins open the 2014 season on the road against the Fayetteville Swampdogs on May 27th. The home opener is the following night, May 28th, when they again take on the Swampdogs. Season tickets and flex books are on sale now at www.mhcmarlins.com and at the Marlins Team Store, located at 508-D Evans Street in Morehead City.
