Marlins in Top 40 for Summer Collegiate Average Attendance

Morehead City, N.C.- Ballpark Digest has released its annual ranking of average attendance for summer collegiate league teams. The 2013 list has the Morehead City Marlins ranked 39th, with an average of 1,257 fans per home game. A total of 167 teams were included in the rankings. According to Ballpark Digest, average attendance is "perhaps the most accurate way to measure the health of a franchise."
The Marlins had three games during which they eclipsed 2,000 fans. The first was the exhibition game vs. the U.S. Military All-Stars on June 8th. The Marlins won the game 4 to 2 in front of the 2,017 in attendance. The next occurred on July 14th for Rock the Rock featuring Dustin Lynch. 2,365 took in the Marlins 4-2 win and the performance by the country music star. On August 5th, the final game of the 2013 season, 2,242 Marlins faithful packed Big Rock Stadium.
Three Coastal Plain League teams cracked the top ten. The Gastonia Grizzlies led the way for the league, ranking fourth in the country with an average of 2,359 fans. The Fayetteville Swampdogs were sixth at 2,147 and the Columbia Blowfish were eighth with an average of 2,006 fans per game. The Madison Mallards of the Northwoods League led the country at 6,110 fans per game.
"The Marlins organization would like to thank the fans for coming out to Big Rock Stadium all summer long and allowing us to rank in the top 40 in the country for average attendance" Marlins General Manager Mitch Kluver said. "We look forward to offering great baseball and entertainment and packing the stands once again in 2014."
The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 64 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
