Morehead City Marlins News Release
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C.- The Tobs scored four times in the first two innings on Sunday against Morehead City, and it was all they would need as the Marlins were held to just three runs in their 8-3 loss to Wilson.
Drew Cole and Zach Callahan both singled to start off the first inning against left-hander Adam Aldred, and later scored to make it a 2-0 lead, which the Tobs extended to 4-0 with a couple more runs in the second.
Aldred, who was making just his first appearance since June 16 when he started against the Tobs in Wilson, was not sharp in his first two frames, walking a couple of batters and allowing five hits. He settled down for the third and fourth, but Wilson kept patient at the dish and put together some long at bats against him, ultimately driving him from the game after four innings and leaving it to the Marlins' bullpen.
"It was really good to see him bounce back and not cave in after those first couple innings," said pitching coach Aaron Meade. "He could have gone deeper for us but his first couple of innings killed his pitch count. We really have to be able to have an out pitch. When they are sitting there battling and battling, we have to be able to put them away."
The Tobs struck again for a lone run in the fifth off Davis Kirkpatrick, and then touched up the right-hander for three more in the seventh inning sparked by a leadoff, solo home run from Drew Cole - his third hit of the game.
At the time it gave Wilson an 8-1 lead, which would later be made 8-3 when Jacob Bruce knocked in a run with a double in the ninth, and Luke Tewes grounded out to drive in another.
Those two runs, and a Nick Lombardi RBI single in the sixth, were all the Marlins could muster against the Tobs' pitching staff Sunday night. They had seven hits, which were scattered by four different Wilson pitchers who all pitched extremely effectively.
Mikel Belcher tossed five innings, and at one point set down 12 batters in a row between the first and fifth innings.
"A lot has to do with the guy they started on the mound," said Marlins' head coach Sam Carel. "He attacked us early, and when you know you are going to [get attacked], you have to be able to attack back."
Braden Bristo and Quinn Atwood then came on in relief and allowed a run in three innings combined, but were extremely strong, striking out five Marlins' hitters. For both Atwood and Bristo, it was their third time facing the Marlins this season, and they have been strong each time.
"When you see a guy a lot, you have to realize what he is trying to do against you," Meade said. "If you can take that as your approach and really just try to battle, you will have good at bats and get to a hitter's count."
Bruce and Blake Graham were the only players with multiple hits for Morehead City, with Bruce going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base and Graham going 2-for-4 with a triple, run and a stolen base.
The Marlins will play at home again on Monday, as they take on the Wilmington Sharks. First pitch is at 7:05.

When you see a guy a lot you have to realize what he is trying to do against you. If you can taw that use your approach and really just try to battle and have a good at bats and try to find your pitch and get to ah itters count.
He started to throw with more confidence as the game went on he got into a groove and a pace and he hadn't throw in a week and a half so it took him a couple of innings to get going. But his pitch count was high and after four we needs to pull him out .
