August 16, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - On Tuesday, Ballpark Digest released their summer collegiate attendance rankings for 2012. The rankings were compiled from 147 summer teams across 17 leagues around the country. The Morehead City Marlins cracked the Top 30 for the first time in franchise history. According to the Ballpark Digest rankings, the Marlins placed 25th in both average and total attendance. The Marlins moved up six spots from the previous year (ranked 31st) and jumped 10 from their inaugural season in 2010 (ranked 35th).
In only 26 Big Rock Stadium openings, the Marlins averaged 1511 fans. Of the three largest attended nights, two were exhibition games. On June 21st, patriotic Marlins fans welcomed the U.S. Military All-Stars for the third consecutive season. On June 27th, the Marlins hosted Team USA's Collegiate National Team; a collection of the top collegiate baseball talent in the nation. Also, during the August 1st double-header, fans cheered for both their hometown team and rising country music band, Love and Theft as they were treated to a live music acoustic set in between games. That night, fans were out in full support as the Marlins set an attendance record with 2,426 people.
"This is certainly a great achievement for the Morehead City Marlins," said Marlins general manager Christopher Marmo. "It seems like just yesterday we played our first game at "The Rock" and fans certainly have supported our organization from day one. This is a testament to our wonderful fans, our hardworking front office and game day staff, and the commitment of ownership", added Marmo.
Inclement weather played an unfortunate role this year as four additional games were postponed. However, the Marlins still attracted a record number of fans. In three years, the Marlins have shown increases in attendance from year to year. In 2012, an average of 350 more fans enjoyed an evening at Big Rock Stadium than in 2010.
