Marlins Bats Stifled in 4-3 Loss

Martinsville, Va. - The Morehead City Marlins capitalized on two opportunistic errors by the Martinsville Mustangs, but the fortunate mistakes were not enough to catalyze the Marlins' lineup at Hooker Field as the visitors fell by the score of 4-3. The loss drops the Marlins to 11-9 in the second half and an overall mark of 25-23.
Morehead City and Martinsville entered Monday night's contest as statistical twins. With team ERAs around four-and-a-half and combined batting averages of .279 and .275, the only meeting of the season between the Marlins and Mustangs was certain to be an offensive struggle. Through five innings of play, though, the score was 1-0 in favor of the home team, courtesy of a solo home run off the bat of Eli Hynes in the bottom of the second inning.
The Marlins were able to plate three unearned runs in the top of the seventh to bring the score within one, but the Morehead City batters lacked the timeliness needed to pull out the victory.
The Marlins travel to Edenton for the first time since being eliminated from the first round of the 2010 Petitt Cup Playoffs by the Steamers last summer. At 18-2 throughout the second half, Edenton sits atop the Baseball America summer collegiate rankings as the number one team in the nation.
When the Steamers visited the Marlins at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City earlier this season, it took 10 innings for Edenton to come out on top, 9-7. Following a visit to Fayetteville to do battle with the SwampDogs on Wednesday, the Marlins will return home to host the Petersburg Generals on Thursday.
