
Marlins Announce Return of Chase McDonald

Morehead City, N.C- The Morehead City Marlins are excited to announce the return of right handed power hitting first baseman Chase McDonald (East Carolina University) for the 2013 season.
McDonald last played with the Marlins in 2011 and spent the summer of 2012 in the Cape Cod League with the Bourne Braves. While with the Marlins in 2011 McDonald was named the Coastal Plain League Offensive Player of the Year. He led the league in hitting with a .403 average, 51 RBI, .663 slugging percentage, and a .469 on base percentage. He was also second in the league in home runs with 13. His RBI total from 2011 is tied for second best in CPL history and his batting average is second best in CPL history. He was named to the CPL All-Star team and was ranked as the fifth best prospect in the CPL according to Baseball America.
McDonald is having a stellar 2013 season for the Pirates. As of May 15th, he has a .295 batting average, a team high nine home runs, and has drove in 41 runs. He also leads the team with a .506 slugging percentage. He was named C-USA hitter of the week on May 6.
McDonald is a native of Greenville, North Carolina. He attended J.H. Rose, where he was a four-year letter winner on the diamond. He was named to the All-State team as a senior, during which he hit .510 with 12 home runs.
"I'm really excited to be back in Morehead City for another season with the Marlins," McDonald said. "I am looking forward to a great summer with the team."
The Marlins home opener is Wednesday May 29th at Puck O'Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium against the Forest City Owls.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 57 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
