Mark Rypien to play one game for the GLIFL Raiders

January 5, 2006 - Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL)
Rochester Raiders News Release

Super Bowl XXVI MVP and two-time Pro Bowler Mark Rypien has signed a one-game contract with the Rochester Raiders to play in an April home game during the team's inaugural 2006 GLIFL season.

"Rypien gives us instant credibility," said Raiders owner and general manager David McCarthy. John Gilmore, a long-time friend of Rypien's that helped finalize the deal, added that his arm "is as good as it ever was. He wants to get in the gym and get into better shape before playing for the Raiders."

Rypien's appearance will also benefit two charities. A portion of his salary will be donated to Camp Good Days and Special Times (website), a Rochester Cancer Charity. Also, a donation will be made to the Mark Rypien Foundation, a charity that raises funds to support local activities and research associated with children with cancer. The Foundation is based in Spokane, Washington, and was founded in response to Rypien's son Andrew, who he lost to cancer in 1998. Mark will also make several appearances during the week while on the Raiders roster, to promote the team and the charities.

In addition to Rypien's salary being donated to charities, the Great Lakes Indoor Football League will purchase a number of tickets for the April contest, which will be donated to Camp Good Days and Special Times.

The GLIFL will kick off its 10-game inaugural season schedule with two games on April 7, 2006. For more information on the Raiders, the GLIFL and its other member teams, please visit the league site at www.glifl.com, or contact Director of Media Relations Josh Stein at jstein@glifl.com.
