Mariners take on the Wave

Virginia Beach, Virginia – The Wave will hit the Beach Friday night at 8 p.m. when Milwaukee Wave United and the Virginia Beach Mariners face off at the Sportsplex. Fox Sports World will televise the match live.

THE MATCHUP

Virginia Beach The Mariners have not had much success in A-League play going 2-6-2 (8 points) this season, resting in 8th place in the 9-team Eastern Conference. In Rochester on June 12, the team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss and the following night, suffered another one goal defeat in Syracuse 1-0. Eight of ten of the team's losses have been by one goal.

Virginia Beach's leading scorer continues to be Dante Washington with 3 goals and 2 assists (8 points) in 9 games. He ranks 19th in points in the A-League. Following Washington are Hamisi Amani-Dove and Pato Aguilera, each with 2 goals and 1 assist each for 5 points each. Jakob Fenger has scored 1 goal and 2 assists (4 points).

Goalkeeper Matt Nelson ranks fourth in the League in saves with 46 and goalkeeper Matt Pickens has recorded two shutouts in his two starts.

Milwaukee

Milwaukee's season so far leaves them at the bottom of the 7-team Western Conference with a record of 1-5-1 (4 points). All five of Milwaukee's losses have also been by a lone goal.

Johnny Torres leads the team with 2 goals and 1 assist for 5 points, followed by three players with 3 points (Chad Dombrowski, Todd Dusosky and Gregory Howes). Goalkeeper Jim Larkin has a 1.333 goals-against-average and 27 saves in 7 matches. Milwaukee's last match was a 2-1 loss in Seattle Open Cup Update

The Mariners qualified for the third round of the U.S. Open Cup March 15, overwhelming the Pro Development League's top team, the DFW Tornadoes, 2-0 on goals by Mark Jonas and Dante Washington. The Mariners outshot the Tornadoes 18-3. The Mariners move on to meet the Dallas Burn (MLS) on Wednesday, June 30, in Texas.
