Mariners Sign USL Veteran Forward John Barry Nusum

May 25, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Virginia Beach Mariners News Release

Virginia Beach, Virginia - The Virginia Beach Mariners added some spark to their front line today, signing USL veteran forward John Barry Nusum. The 6-1, 205-pound Mineola, New York native, played indoors for the Philadelphia Kixx in the outdoor off-season, scoring 25 goals and 17 assists.

Nusum was selected by the Columbus Crew in the Major League Soccer 2002 Super Draft, but signed with the USL's Atlanta Silverbacks. He was the Silverbacks' leading scorer in 2003 with seven goals, and then moved on to the Toronto Lynx, where he scored four goals in 22 games last season.

Nusum is also a regular with the National Team of Bermuda. He grew up in Devonshire.

Nusum played his collegiate soccer at Furman University in South Carolina where the Paladins were a perennial top 25 team and he still holds the all-time mark in goals scored (61) and points (161).

Both Nusum's father and uncle were professional soccer players. His father, John, played for the Rochester Lancers and San Diego Sockers in the North American Soccer League, and with the New York Arrows in the MISL. His uncle Sam played in the NASL with the Montreal Olympiques, Vancouver Whitecaps and New York Cosmos.

John Barry joined the Mariners today for the team's west-coast swing this week. They will face the Seattle Sounders tonight, the Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday, May 27 and the Portland Timbers on Saturday, May 28.

Virginia Beach returns home to the Sportsplex on Saturday night, June 4 to face the Sounders again.

The June 4th match will be Soccer Mom's/Ladies' Night. All Moms/Ladies will get in free if accompanied by a full-paying husband/friend or child. The match will feature a halftime women's game and Ball Moms on the sidelines. Moms-only door prizes will include dinners, movie tickets, a Merry Maids gift certificate, certificates for interior design consultations by Cathy Knack, Interior Design, and other gifts.
