Mariners return to PGE Park for March 31 game

PORTLAND, Ore. - Four years after entertaining a capacity crowd in Portland, the Seattle Mariners today announced they are returning to PGE Park to take on the Portland Beavers.

The Mariners will face the Beavers in a spring training exhibition game, presented by Toyota Trucks, at PGE Park on Friday, March 31. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

The event marks the Mariners' first appearance in Portland since 2002, when Seattle and the San Diego Padres played before a sold-out crowd of 19,778 at PGE Park.

"As evidenced in 2002, the Mariners are an extremely popular draw in this area, so it is quite exciting for baseball fans and the city of Portland that we're able to bring them back to play the Beavers," said John Cunningham, president and general manager of the Beavers. "This game will be a great start to the 2006 season, and it will be a unique opportunity for fans to get an early look at the Beavers as they approach their home opener on April 6."

An on-sale date for individual tickets to the Mariners game will be announced at a later time. Tickets for the event will range from $9 to $27.

Fans do have the opportunity to secure their seats prior to individual tickets going on sale, as the Mariners game is included in the Beavers' full-season and mini-plan ticket packages, as well as a variety of group plans available for the 2006 season. The PGE Park exhibition game highlights the closing of both teams' spring training schedule.

"This provides us with a great opportunity to play in front of our fans in the Northwest before we begin the regular season," Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager, Baseball Operations Bill Bavasi said. "The Beavers do a great job in their operation, and we know Portland is full of Mariners fans."

Seattle, led by the likes of outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, third baseman Adrian Beltre and Portland-native Richie Sexson, opens the regular season a mere three days after its visit to PGE Park when it faces the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Seattle's Safeco Field on Monday, April 3.

The Beavers, who enter their sixth season as the Triple-A affiliate of the Padres, open the Pacific Coast League season at home for the first time since returning to the league in 2001. Portland begins the 2006 campaign against the Sacramento River Cats at PGE Park on Thursday, April 6.

The Mariners, who are making just their third-ever trip to Portland, are 1-1 at PGE Park, defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2 at then-Civic Stadium on April 2, 1984, and losing 3-1 to the Padres on March 29, 2002.

The Beavers are 1-0 against major league opponents at PGE Park since the 2001 season; Portland edged the Padres 3-2 on March 28, 2003.
