Mariners Make Roster Changes

June 2, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Virginia Beach Mariners News Release

Virginia Beach, Virginia - "We had to make some changes," said Virginia Beach Mariners' head coach Shawn McDonald. "The team is not doing well so we brought in some new players to see if they could make a difference."

The Mariners announce the following roster changes:

Mariners sign forward John Barry Nusum

The 6-1, 205-pound Mineola, New York native, played indoors for the Philadelphia Kixx in the outdoor off-season, scoring 25 goals and 17 assists.

Nusum was selected by the Columbus Crew in the Major League Soccer 2002 Super Draft, but signed with the USL's Atlanta Silverbacks. He was the Silverbacks' leading scorer in 2003 with seven goals, and then moved on to the Toronto Lynx, where he scored four goals in 22 games last season.

Nusum is also a regular with the National Team of Bermuda. He grew up in Devonshire.

Nusum played his collegiate soccer at Furman University in South Carolina where the Paladins were a perennial top 25 team and he still holds the all-time mark in goals scored (61) and points (161).

Both Nusum's father and uncle were professional soccer players. His father, John, played for the Rochester Lancers and San Diego Sockers in the North American Soccer League, and with the New York Arrows in the MISL. His uncle Sam played in the NASL with the Montreal Olympiques, Vancouver Whitecaps and New York Cosmos.

Mariners sign defender Ptah (TAH) Myers

The Columbus, Ohio native spent the 2005 off-season with the Philadelphia Kixx of MISL, scoring 6 goals and 2 assists in 35 games. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, he was named 2003 First Team All Atlantic-10 scoring 21 points (9 goals, 3 assists) leading the team. He finished his collegiate career ranked seventh all-time with 70 points (27 goals, 16 assists), scoring at least 20 points in his last three years. Myers played with PDL's Albany Blackwatch Highlanders and the West Palm Beach Pumas. He is 5-10, 175 pounds and is 24 years old. In order to make room for these new players, the Mariners released forwards Carlos Garcia and Kevon Harris.
