Mariners fall to Atlanta 2-1

August 21, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Virginia Beach Mariners News Release

Clarkston, GA - In keeping with the 112-degree field temperature at James Halliford Stadium, Atlanta started out hot against the Mariners Sunday night getting on the board just 12 minutes into the match and holding on to win 2-1.

Atlanta's leading scorer Fabian Dawkins scored off a feed from Rodrigo Rios beating Virginia Beach keeper Matt Nelson low and to the right. Atlanta went up 2-0 eight minutes later when Mariner defender Joe Morelli was called for a foul 20 yards from the Atlanta goal and Silverback defender David Hayes was able to score on the ensuing free kick.

The Mariners pulled to within one in the 37th minute, when John Barry Nusum's header found the net. Jakob Fenger served the cross from the right side that found Nusum open in front of the goal.

Despite numerous chances in the game's closing minutes, including two corners and a free kick within 20 yards, the Mariners could not capitalize. Virginia Beach outshot Atlanta 10-8.

The Mariners travel north of the border this upcoming weekend to face first-place Montreal on Friday and last place Toronto on Sunday. The Mariners will return home to the Sportsplex to host Portland on Friday, September 2 and Charleston on Sunday, September 4. Both home games will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
