Mariners Bring James River Cup Home - Draw with Richmond 1-1

April 15, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Virginia Beach Mariners News Release

Richmond, Virginia - Virginia Beach Mariner fans will get an opportunity to see the James River Cup at its new home at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex on April 22 at 7 p.m. when the team opens its 2006 regular season campaign against Toronto.

The Mariners returned from Richmond Saturday night with the Cup in tow- winning it back for the first time in 10 years. Mariner midfielder Jeff Bilyk scored in the 33rd minute and Richmond's Robert Ssejjemba netted a shot four minutes later to forge the 1-1 tie. The Cup winner is determined using a point system in the two-match derby -- 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. The Mariners beat Richmond in the first game 3-0 on April 8, and ended up winning the Cup 4 points to 1.

Bilyk opened the scoring off a Nate Micklos ball that was bouncing around the Kicker's box. Richmond keeper Ronnie Pascale came out for the save and Bilyk volleyed the ball over his head. Ssejjemba took the ball just past midfield from teammate Tony Williams and dribbled through the Mariner defense beating Virginia Beach keeper Matt Nelson to the left side.

The Mariners will open the 2006 regular season with a preseason record of 7-0-2, outscoring their opponents 20-7.

Gates for the April 22 regular season opener, will open at 4:30 p.m. Preceding the Mariners vs. Toronto will be an exhibition match at 5 p.m. between the "All Army" Women's Soccer Team (comprised of active duty and reserve soldiers from all over the world) and the Virginia Rush Nike U-16's. The Mariners' match will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
