Wachusett Dirt Dawgs News Release
LEOMINSTER, Mass. - (February 3, 2014) - The Wachusett Dirt Dawgs announced today that they will be welcoming back Kevin Marciano, Vincent Sharkey, and Richard Fecteau for the 2014 season at Doyle Field.
"All of the returning players have the character and skill level to help mold this summer version of the Dirt Dawgs," said Head Coach Kevin Barnaby, "We are extremely fortunate to have them return."
Kevin Marciano is a sophomore at Western New England University and is from Pepperell, Mass. Last season, Marciano posted a .349 on base percentage as an infielder for the Dirt Dawgs, so it is no question that the team will rely on him to get on base and put the team in good position to score some runs.
"I am thrilled to come back for another season," said Marciano, "I hope to be better than last year so I can help the Dirt Dawgs win a championship!"
Coach Barnaby likes what Marciano brings to the park every day. "Kevin is a high energy, high character kid. Ever day he shows up to the ball park he is going to do whatever it takes for the team to succeed," said Barnaby.
Vincent Sharkey is a junior at Adelphi on Long Island and a resident of Lynbrook, New York. Sharkey last played for the Dirt Dawgs as a second baseman during the 2012 season, however his season was cut short due to injury. He finished is 2012 season with 16 hits for the Dirt Dawgs. With Adelphi in 2013, he hit .327 and was named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team. After taking the summer off last year, he is looking forward to returning to the team.
"I'm excited to return to the Dirt Dawgs for my second year with them. I had a great experience the first time so I'm thankful to be playing for the organization once again. My goals for the upcoming season are to improve my game and to help the team win and compete for a championship. The game is more fun when we're winning and competing for a championship," said Sharkey.
"We are excited to have Sharkey back after a fantastic season by him in 2012," said Scott Lettre, Director of Baseball Operations, "His character and energy are going to fit perfectly with our team in 2014."
Richard Fecteau is a sophomore at Salem State University and hails from Newbury, Mass. Last season Fecteau was on fire during the six games he played, posting a batting average of .346. Fecteau excels during the summer, because he only has to focus on one thing; baseball.
"The Dirt Dawgs give us the opportunity to just concentrate on baseball because during the school year, we are all student-athletes," said Fecteau.
Fecteau believes that there is always room to improve his individual game and he looks forward to becoming an even better ball player this upcoming season. Fecteau stated, "Last year the Dirt Dawgs gave me an opportunity to play in a high level summer baseball league and as a result of this, it will help me become a better baseball player as I progress through my college career. Playing with and against talented players from throughout this country is advantage to anyone playing this game."
Coach Barnaby is looking forward to Fecteau's production in 2014. "Having his bat at the top of the line up and setting the tone for our middle guys will be a huge asset for us," said Coach Barnaby, "He grinds out at bats, runs the bases extremely well, and has good pop for a lead off guy."
All three players swing into action for the spring in the next few weeks, with trips to Florida and the Carolinas.
The Wachusett Dirt Dawgs play at historic Doyle Field in Leominster, MA and will be entering their 3rd season of competition in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, a ten-team league dedicated to developing college baseball talent, while providing fun, family affordable outdoor entertainment and baseball.
