Laurel, MD (February 19, 2009) The Maryland Maniacs bring in former Syracuse defensive end and NJCAA All-American Jamar Atkinson as they gear up for their debut in the Indoor Football League (IFL).

Washington, DC. native Atkinson (6'2'', 235lbs) attended Garfield High School in Woodbridge, VA where his work on the field led to a 2001 PrepStar All-Atlantic Region selection, Washington Post All-State Honorable Mention, and number 30 prospect rating in Virginia by SuperPrep. These accolades were a result of exceptional performances on both sides of the ball including 11 touchdowns, 330 yards passing, 840 yards rushing, and 97 tackles, including 12 for a loss, earning him team MVP, team Offensive Player of the Year and the team's top linebacker awards as a senior.

In 2002 Atkinson entered Morrisville State College as an individual studies major and made an immediate impact with the Mustangs as a middle linebacker. He gained 2002 and 2003 First-team All-Northeast Football Conference selections after leading the team to league titles both years. Atkinson was also a NFC All-Conference First Team Defense selection in 2002. The 2003 NFC Defensive Player of the Year started all 11 games for the Mustangs, leading the team and finished second in the conference with 106 total tackles, 52 solo and 54 assisted.

In his two year career at SUNY Morrisville Atkinson recorded 171 total tackles, 81 solo and 90 assisted to become the all-time defensive leader at Morrisville. He finished his college career playing his junior and senior years for the Syracuse Orangemen. As a senior, he played in all 12 games.

Atkinson enjoyed a professional debut with the Chesapeake Tide with 4.5 tackles, two sacks, 1 forced fumble, and three tackles for a loss.

Jamar Atkinson was born February 29, 1984 in Washington, D.C. He's the son of Dwight and Josephine Atkinson of Woodbridge VA, and has three brothers and one sister.

The Maryland Maniacs are members of the Indoor Football League (IFL).  The IFL is a national league with headquarters in Richmond, VA and 19 teams located across the United States.  The Maryland Maniacs kick off a 14 game schedule in March with seven home games at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro.  Their home opener is on March 29, 2009 against The River City Rage of St. Louis, MO.  For additional information about the Maryland Maniacs, please visit http://www.marylandmaniacs.com.
