Mangone Scores Wins Game 5 in OT, Spirit Take 3-2 Lead

Saginaw, Mich. - The Saginaw Spirit faced the Soo Greyhounds at the Dow Event Center for Game 5 of their second-round series on Friday night. Calem Mangone scored the game winning goal in overtime to put the Spirit up 3-2 over the Greyhounds in the series so far. Charlie Schenkel started in net for the Soo saving 37 of 40 shots. At the other end, Nolan Lalonde stopped 32 of 34 shots on goal.

Zayne Parekh, Calem Mangone and Caedan Carlisle were all sent to the penalty box after a skirmish at 11:33. Carlisle and Mangone both received roughing penalties while Parekh received a cross-checking. This led to Bryce McConnell-Barker scoring the first goal of the game with Gavin Hayes and Kirill Kudryavtsev being credited with the assists.

AFTER 1: SAG 0 - 1 SOO (Total Shots: 15 - 5)

Just two minutes into the second, Matyas Sapovaliv scored the first Spirit goal of the night. After collecting a pass from Zayne Parekh, Jorian Donovan passed to Sapovaliv who fired a shot from the right faceoff dot right past Schenkel's blocker. This goal came on an even 4v4 with Rodwin Dionicio serving a slashing penalty and Justin Cloutier serving an unsportsmanlike at 1:39.

The Soo Greyhounds managed to break the tie with two minutes left in the second. Jack Beck was the goal scorer with assists going to Owen Allard and Kirill Kudryavtsev.

AFTER 2: SAG 1 - 2 SOO (2nd Period Shots: 8 - 11 Total Shots: 23 - 18)

Seven minutes into the third, Owen Allard was called for holding and was sent to the penalty box. Saginaw took advantage of this power play with Hunter Haight firing a shot from the point that sailed right over Schenkel's glove. Calem Mangone and Rodwin Dionicio both received assists on this power play goal as well that would send the Spirit into overtime.

AFTER 3: SAG 2 - 2 SOO (3rd Period Shots: 9 - 9 Total Shots: 32 - 27)

At 7:53 in overtime, Matyas Sapovaliv attempted a shot on goal from the slot but the puck bounced off Schenkels pads to Calem Mangone. Schenel dove for the puck and missed, leaving the net wide open for Mangone to tip the puck in for the game winning goal. Joey Willis also earned an assist on this game winning goal to give the Spirit a 3-2 series lead.

FINAL: SAG 3 - 2 SOO (4th Period Shots: 7 - 8 Total Shots: 40 - 34)

Powerplay: SAG 1/5, SOO 1/2

Goaltenders: SAG: Nolan Lalonde (32 Saves / 34 Shots, W ) - SOO: (37 Saves / 40 Shots, L)

Game 6 will take place at the GFL Memorial Gardens on April 21st. Puck drop is at 7:07pm.
