Manchester Wolves News Release

The Wolves have four days of practice this week as they prepare for the 2-4 South Georgia Wildcats. Manchester also has the luxury this week of having three practice sessions at the Verizon Wireless Arena leading up to Friday.

Game 6 Wrap-up – Wolves Survive At Albany, 48-47; Win Fifth Straight Game To Improve To 5-1

The Manchester Wolves needed a little help from an unlikely source in order to narrowly defeat the Albany Conquest, 48-47, Saturday night at Pepsi Arena. That source was Albany kicker Marc Samuel, who missed two extra points and two field goals, including the potential game-winner from 24 yards out with 3.4 seconds left that hit the right upright and sailed no good. The first half was an impressive offensive show by both teams as each team scored on every possession except for Albany's last opportunity in the final seconds. The Wolves held a slim 35-33 lead at halftime on the strength of a Jake Eaton 2-point conversion run with 16 seconds left after completing a 30-yard scoring screen pass to Jamaal Perry. In the second half, the defenses made their presence felt and slowed down play. The Wolves, however, did manage to score 13 third-quarter points to push their lead to 48-40 going into the final 15 minutes of play. Manchester had a chance to put the game away in the final minutes, but a J.J. McKelvey fumble after a reception was recovered by Albany's Donte Wells with 1:00 to play. That set up Albany's late drive down the field and Samuel's last-second miss. Despite his fumble, McKelvey had a solid overall game and earned Offensive Player of the Game honors with nine catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns. QB Jake Eaton played a strong game as well, throwing for a game-high 288 yards and five scores with no INTs. On defense, the Wolves received a big effort out of OL/DL JoJo Oliphant, who recorded 5.0 total tackles, 2.0 for loss, including one sack. Oliphant garnered ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors for his performance.

Game 7 Preview – Wolves vs. S. Georgia Wildcats – 7:30 PM

The Wolves (5-1) enter Friday night's home game in a first-place tie in the East Division on the strength of a five-game winning streak. The Wildcats are currently tied for second place in the American Conference, South Division with a 2-4 record. South Georgia has played well of late, however, winning their last two games after starting the year 0-4. The Wildcats most recent win was their first at home in 2005, a 62-48 victory against the winless Arkansas Twisters. They are led by veteran QB and former AFL signal caller Bobby Pesavento. Through five games, Pesavento has thrown for 1,355 yards and 32 touchdowns. WR/LB Chris McKinney leads the receiving corps with 35 catches for 343 yards and 11 touchdowns. As a group, South Georgia's offensive averages 49.0 points per game. McKinney is also a standout on defense, leading the team in tackles with 21.0. South Georgia, formerly Cape Fear, leads the all-time series with the Wolves, 3-2.

Wolves Anticipate Being Named Top-Ranked Team in af2; Recognition To Come in Coaches Poll Wed.

With the Wolves' win against Albany on Saturday coupled with the Florida Firecats' loss at Bossier City, Manchester (5-1) should be named the No. 1-ranked team in the league when the af2 releases its latest coaches poll on Wednesday. If that happens, it will mark the first time in team history that the Wolves have ascended to such a lofty ranking. Florida has held the top spot for the first seven weeks of the af2 season.
