Saint John Riptide News Release
The Manchester Millrats held off a pesky Montreal Royal team for a 106-103 win.
The Millrats extended to a 69-49 lead in the third quarter behind the play of guard Anthony Anderson (20 points) and All Star forward Rob Sanders (22 points). Sanders acrobatic attacks on the rim combined with Anderson's efficient play helped Manchester gain the advantage.
Montreal rallied late in the fourth quarter and cut the lead to seven with just 2:42 remaining in the game. Then the Royal hit a three pointer. On the ensuing play Millrats guard John Huggins turned the ball over and Bobby Miller nailed a three point plus one for the 3D, to tie the score at 98-98. But David Cooper tipped in an errant miss for the go ahead basket, and Manchester made enough free throws down the stretch to earn the victory.
Manchester was led by Rob Sanders with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 block, Anthony Anderson scored 20 points on 8-10 shooting from the field, and Stacey Moragne added 16 points and 9 boards. Montreal's leading scorers were Cordell Jeanty and Tommy Mitchell, each with 25 points. The Millrats improve to 5-1 while the Royal drop to 1-6.
"Montreal is a good team - better than their record - they made a tough comeback tonight to come from 20 points down, but our guys demonstrated the mental toughness needed to get the win," explained Millrats Head Coach Larry Lessett.
The Millrats next opponent is the Corning Bulldogs Wednesday night in New York. Next weekend is doubleheader ABA action in Manchester with the Halifax Rainmen visiting on Saturday at 7:05 pm, and the undefeated defending ABA champion Vermont Frost Heaves here on Sunday at 4:35 pm.
