DENVER - One night after coming up just short in Calgary, the Colorado Mammoth stumbled at Rexall Place in Edmonton. Colorado trailed 6-0 late in the first quarter, and never managed to close the gap as the Rush won its home-opener, 17-6.
Mammoth rookie goaltender Dillon Ward, who had been stellar in relief in the team's first three games, got his first career NLL start. It didn't last long. Tye Belanger, who had been the starter, didn't fare much better.
Two weeks after Colorado held 2013 NLL Rookie of the Year Mark Matthews without a goal (for the first time in his career), the University of Denver product exploded for five goals and four assists. Zack Greer also chipped in five goals for the Rush.
Drew Westervelt led Colorado with three goals, while Adam Jones had two goals and four assists. Sean Pollock notched the Mammoth's only other tally of the night.
The Mammoth visits the Stealth in Vancouver on Friday before returning to HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center to take on the Buffalo Bandits on "ÃËMilitary Appreciation Night' on Saturday.
