Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth opens the 2015 National Lacrosse League season this Sat., Jan. 3 at 6pm MT against the Minnesota Swarm at Xcel Energy Center, marking just the third time in team history that its opener is on the road. Four of the first seven picks in the 2014 NLL Entry Draft (COL: Eli McLaughlin, 4th & Robert Hope, 7th; MIN: Miles Thompson, 3rd & Shane MacDonald, 5th) are expected to make their debuts.
"The off-season is a thing of the past, and it's time to finally play again," said Mammoth president & general manager Steve Govett. "I'm incredibly confident in the group we have, and look forward to seeing how the young players contribute right out of the box."
Colorado's Dillon Ward, the third-overall pick in the 2013 NLL Entry Draft, begins the season as the team's starting goaltender. As a rookie last year, he went 2-0 against Minnesota. In the team's Apr. 19 meeting, Ward recorded a career-high in saves (51) while facing a career-high 63 shots on goal.
Forward Sean Pollock, who joined the Mammoth three years ago after spending the bulk of his career with the Swarm, enters his final NLL season just two goals shy of 200, one assist from 300, and three points from 500.
Historically, Colorado has played well at "ËThe Hive', boasting a 7-3 record. In the meeting last April in Minnesota, the Mammoth posted a season-high 18 goals scored in the six-goal victory.
"In the past, we've enjoyed a good amount of success in their building," said Govett. "That said, both teams are hungry to start the season with a win."
Colorado is winless in its two previous season-openers away from home.
The Mammoth home-opener is next Sat., Jan. 10 at 7pm on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center against the defending West Division champion Calgary Roughnecks. Colorado was eliminated from the playoffs a season ago by Calgary in overtime. Tickets to the home-opener are on sale now at AltitudeTickets.com.
