DENVER - Colorado Mammoth Wild Bunch dance team auditions concluded late Wednesday night at FORZA Fitness and Performance Club in downtown Denver, Colo. with the naming of the 2014 team. Nine rookies join three veterans on the squad, which will perform at all Mammoth home games and appear at select community events throughout the year.
"We've assembled a great team, and I'm proud of every woman who auditioned," said dance team manager Amy Jo Wagner. "It's always tough to say goodbye to dancers throughout the audition process, but I feel fortunate to have had so much talent try out for this year's team."
Twenty-two finalists danced to three songs in front of a panel of nine judges on Wednesday.
Team captain Sammie, a five-year veteran, said that one thing about the first-year finalists really stood out.
"The technique these rookies had this year - it was very, very impressive!"
So impressive that, for the first time in Wild Bunch audition history, several newcomers were unanimous selections by the judges!
"I was blown away by the quality of the competition," said Mammoth president & general manager Steve Govett. "The Wild Bunch is an integral part of the Mammoth experience, and they are ambassadors of our organization in the community. I have great expectations for the twelve women who stood out above the rest."
For first-year Wild Bunch dancer McKenna, the 11-day process from first audition to interview to finals is something she said she'll always remember.
"It was just so much fun. I made a lot of really good connections."
Judges selected McKenna as one of the 12 in the hour-long deliberation. When Wagner returned to notify the women who made the cut, Kelsey heard eleven numbers called before her dream came true.
"This isn't real! I was in shock when I heard my number. I didn't think (Amy Jo) was going to say it because I was the very last person."
