Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) defeated the Toronto Rock 16-8 Saturday night at Ball Arena before 9,363 rowdy fans.
After tying the franchise's all-time win streak at six-consecutive victories courtesy of the team's 13-13 win over the Las Vegas Desert Dogs Friday night, the Mammoth set a new franchise record Saturday night via the team's seventh-straight win as Colorado remained RED HOT.
It might've looked like it was the Toronto Rock who played the night before, but it was indeed the home team which scored 16 goals Saturday who exited the weekend with two wins.
Andrew Kew paced the Mammoth once again with 10 points (4g, 10), while Will Malcom (2g, 5a) and Braedon Saris (3g, 4a) each netted seven points. Jack Hannah recorded six points (1g, 5a) in the win, with Dylan McIntosh (2g, 1a) and Matthew Paolatto (2g 0a) netting two apiece.
Mammoth goaltender Dillon Ward stopped 37-of-44 shots faced before youngster Nathan Whittom was called to action, eventually stopping eight of nine shots on goal.
Needing just seven seconds to get the scoring started, rookie faceoff specialist Matthew Paolatto won the opening draw and instantly took off darting toward Rock netminder Troy Holowchuk. This play was ALL Paolatto, ALL the way, as the first-year provided an immediate boost to the LOUD HOUSE crowd.
Making it two goals in the opening 61 seconds, Will Malcom skipped high around a screen before sprinting past the set of players and right to the crease en route to solving Holowchuk once more as the Mammoth established an early two-goal lead.
Three-straight as Ball arena was ROCKING early, Malcom swung the ball across the turf to an awaiting Braedon Saris, who stepped down into a nasty rocket of an overhanded shot and logged his eighth conversion of his rookie campaign.
Following the first media timeout, AK42 got in on the fun from afar. Firing a long-range snipe, Andrew Kew recorded his team-high 22nd goal of the year.
Bouncers WILL indeed go, especially coming from the stick of "The Tiger" Jack Hannah. Letting one loose during a power-play look, Hannah notched his first of the night as the Mammoth were in front 5-0 nine minutes into the opening quarter.
Getting the Rock on the board with 5:16 to play in quarter one, Phil Mazzuca completed a transition effort to bring Toronto back within four.
When the first quarter came to an end, Colorado was up front at home 5-1 despite playing just 24 hours prior against the Las Vegas Desert Dogs.
However, Toronto's Challen Rogers quickly made it a 5-2 game just 43 seconds into the fresh session as the Rock were down three.
Enter crease extraordinaire Owen Rahn, who leapt into the boards in celebration after netting his ninth goal of the season. The second year forward can get involved at just about any part of the floor and made the most of his offensive set early in the second.
Two in a row for Colorado once more, Kew doubled down as the LOUD HOUSE exploded in approval for the seventh time as the talented scorer couldn't help himself from another tally.
Which only sparked a second tally from Saris 48 seconds later, who stung some top ched from the kitchen as the No. 5 overall selection in the 2025 NLL Entry Draft was heating up.
Sure, Mark Matthews got one back for the visiting contingent less than a minute later. But the Mammoth were still up five with 10 to play in the half.
And Colorado's offense has been on fire lately, if you hadn't noticed! Cleared for liftoff, Dylan McIntosh leapt across the crease to reinstate a six-goal advantage for the Mammoth.
Following a scoreless six-plus minutes of play, Matthews landed a bouncer past Ward to create a 9-4 late in the second period.
Things got pretty chippy throughout the second quarter but Colorado's lead was still a hefty five goals when halftime dawned, up 9-4.
Setting the tone to begin the second half, Toronto's Chris Boushy made his way to the scoresheet just 55 seconds into the third quarter as the Rock were down four in Denver.
Two in the half and now three in a row, Rock rookie forward Owen Hiltz managed his first of the night as Toronto was mounting a wave of momentum following the break.
Killing the Rock's run while starting up a run of their own, Colorado answered back midway through the third. After being held to six assists Friday night in Las Vegas, Will Malcom notched his second of the night via a direct strike, his 20th tally of the year. Mammoth were up 10-6.
Earning a hat trick in yet another game, Kew took advantage of some allotted space during a 4-on-4 look to increase Colorado's lead to five while injecting the LOUD HOUSE with another dosage of ELECTRICTY.
Just 25 seconds later, Saris finished off a hat trick of his own as the rookie was feeling himself Saturday night. Welcome to the pipes, Steve Orleman!
The Mammoth streak continued shortly after, as McIntosh doubled down for the good guys.
Literally just five seconds later, Paolatto recorded the first two-goal performance of his career after winning a draw and sprinting net front once again.
Absolutely handing it to Toronto at this point, Kew wanted a fourth and GOT his fourth of the night. It might've been another man-up tally, but they count all the same. Six-straight for Colorado.
Following the first 45 minutes of action, the scoreboard read 15-6 in Colorado favor.
Challen Rogers scored two minutes into the fourth but "nobody cares" as LOUD HOUSE PA Announcer Big Rob likes to say.
Nathan Whittom entered the game with 8:26 to play, as Ward had played his part and played it well once again Saturday night.
Rogers put the finishing touches on his hat trick shortly after the swap as the Rock were down 15-8.
Becoming the eighth different Mammoth scorer to find twine, Thomas Vela landed a sick dunk effort from the backside with 6:30 remaining on the clock as fans inside Ball Arena were enjoying themselves. And so were the Burgundy boys!
And despite a high-scoring contest overall, that would serve as the contest's final conversion as the Mammoth captured the 16-8 win.
The Mammoth will now head east for an instant rematch against the Toronto Rock as the two squads complete the home-and-home series Friday, Feb. 20 at TD Coliseum.
Limited tickets remain for Colorado's Feb. 27 showdown against the San Diego Seals, which will feature some custom Grateful Dead x Mammoth jerseys available via group ticket packages, so be sure to lock in your tickets and get ready to TUSK UP!
