DENVER - With a berth in the National Lacrosse League playoffs and a share of the West Division lead on the line, the Colorado Mammoth dominated the fourth quarter of Sunday's game at Pepsi Center to earn a 16-11 victory and a season sweep over the Arizona Sting.

The Mammoth (8-5) moved into a first-place tie with the Calgary Roughnecks and Portland LumberJax and all three teams are now ticketed to the playoffs. Arizona (6-7) and San Jose (5-7) will battle for the West's fourth and final playoff spot.

The Mammoth took a 10-9 lead into the fourth quarter and delighted the crowd of 16,453 by scoring four consecutive goals that would put the game out of reach.

"The fans continue to show incredible support here and all of us with the Mammoth organization are thrilled to be making another playoff run," Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said.

Jay Jalbert scored the third of his game-high five goals to open the quarter and Nick Carlson added a goal to increase the lead to three. Defenseman Tom Ethington, who recorded the first two-goal game of his career, set up Jalbert's fourth goal by flattening an Arizona player, taking the ball and flipping it to Jalbert, who scored on an easy breakaway. Josh Sims followed with his second of the night, a shorthanded tally that gave the Mammoth a 14-9 lead.

Ethington, a late-round draft pick by the Mammoth in 2002, had only scored one goal in 13 career games entering this season. He has now played in all but one of the Mammoth's games this season and has three goals.

Mammoth captain Gavin Prout led all scorers with seven points on three goals and four assists. Dan Carey, Ben Prepchuk and Chris Gill each added one goal for the Mammoth. Gee Nash started the game in the Mammoth goal, but did not play in the second half. Nash sustained a concussion after taking a hard shot to the head in the first half. Chris Levis made 32 second-half saves to earn the victory in goal.

Dan Dawson led the Sting with five points and Curt Malawski scored a team-high four goals. Rob Blasdell made 30 saves and took the loss in goal for the Sting. He was replaced early in the fourth quarter by Mike Miron, who made four saves and allowed the Mammoth's last three goals.

Jalbert opened the scoring in the second half with a goal that put the Mammoth up 8-6, but the Sting answered with two goals in the span of 38 seconds to tie the score.

Gill picked up the rebound of a Prout shot and tucked it past Blasdell to tie the game at six with 5 minutes remaining in the first half. Prout then gave the Mammoth the lead when he poked the ball into the goal as it came to rest on the goal line after a Blasdell save of a shot by Langtry and the Mammoth took the 7-6 lead into halftime.

The Mammoth used a four-goal run to finish the first quarter with 5-3 lead. The Sting regained the lead by scoring the first three goals of the second quarter.

Jalbert scored 35 seconds into the game, but the Sting answered with three consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead.
