Mallards sign rookie Drew Otten

Moline, IL â Right wing Drew Otten, fresh off an outstanding four-year career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, has signed a contract to play his rookie season of 2003-2004 with the United Hockey League's Western Conference Champion Quad City Mallards. Team President/General Manager Howard Cornfield made the announcement today.
Otten teamed for four years of collegiate play at Minnesota-Duluth with center Jon Francisco, who starred for the Mallards in the 2003 UHL Playoffs following his senior season. Future Hockey Hall of Famer Brett Hull is a Bulldogs alumnus, as are former Mallards Brian Bolf, Rusty Fitzgerald, and Brant Nicklin.
A 25-year-old native of Edina, Minn., whose current hometown is Minnetonka, Minn., Otten established himself as a top collegiate player in his freshman season of 1999-00. He scored the game-winning goal in the Bulldogs' home opener. He went on to lead all freshmen in scoring and was named the team's Rookie of the Year.
Otten, who stands six-foot and 195 pounds, helped lead the Bulldogs to a 22-15-5 record his senior season and a third place finish in the WCHA Playoffs. He concluded his collegiate career with 146 games played and 69 points, on 30 goals and 39 assists. Before college, he played three seasons in the United States Hockey League, the top junior league in the U.S. His best USHL season was his final one, 1998-99, when he totaled 48 points, on 22 goals and 26 assists, in 58 games for the Twin City Vulcans and the Lincoln Stars.
The signing of Drew Otten brings the number of players under contract to five. Goaltender Jeff Reynaert and defensemen Andy Fermoyle, Terry Hollinger, and Adam Kragthorpe all previously inked deals to play for Quad City in 2003-2004.
The Mallards will open the home portion of their 2003-04 schedule on Saturday, Nov. 8, at The MARK of the Quad Cities, when they host the Flint Generals.
