Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, IL â Jason Sessa, a two-time 30-goal scorer in the East Coast Hockey League, has signed a 2003-2004 contract with the United Hockey League Western Conference Champion Quad City Mallards. Team President/General Manager Howard Cornfield made the announcement today. With Sessa and Jeff Williams on board, the Mallards have two of the most potent offensive weapons in the UHL.
Sessa, a 26-year-old right wing from Long Island, N.Y., led the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays with 34 goals in 2000-01 and played in the league's All-Star Game. The Stingrays went on to win the league title, but Sessa missed the playoff run because he was called up to the American Hockey League's St. John's Maple Leafs and participated in their post-season.
In 2001-02, Sessa scored 30 goals for South Carolina and the Dayton Bombers, to whom he was traded in February 2002. He helped the Bombers reach the 2002 ECHL Championship Series by scoring two game-winning goals during their playoff run. This past season, Sessa played for the Sheffield Steelers in the British Icehockey Super League, scoring 19 points on eight goals and 11 assists in 32 games.
This summer, Sessa teamed with Mallards goaltender Jeff Reynaert as the U.S. won the bronze medal in the International Ice Hockey Federation In-Line Hockey World Championships, held in Germany in July. Sessa scored seven points, on six goals and an assist.
The Toronto Maple Leafs chose Sessa in the fourth round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He began his pro career with St. John's, Toronto's AHL affiliate. He led their forwards with a +8 plus/minus rating in his first full season, 1998-99. In addition to St. John's, Sessa has seen action with the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and Springfield Falcons, and has played a total of 104 regular season AHL games.
Sessa has scored 137 points, on 75 goals and 62 assists, in 138 career ECHL contests. His total of 274 pro games is just below the new limit of 280 under the UHL's rule for determining veteran status. The limit had been 250 games before it was changed this year. Teams are allowed to dress a maximum of six veterans.
Before his pro career, Sessa played three seasons for Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. He tied for the team lead with 22 goals in 1996-97 and was named second team All-Conference in the Central Collegiate Athletic Association.
Quad City now has 11 players under contract for the upcoming season, which gets underway Oct. 24 at Rockford. They include forwards Bob Crummer, Drew Otten, Sessa, and Williams, defensemen Andy Fermoyle, Terry Hollinger, Freddy Jobin, Adam Kragthorpe, Tom Menicci, and goaltenders Masahito Haruna and Jeff Reynaert.
