Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, IL â The Quad City Mallards exploded for a team season-high eight goals in an 8-2 win over the Rockford IceHogs, Sunday at The MARK of the Quad Cities. The six-goal margin of victory tied a United Hockey League season high. Coupled with Saturday's 6-2 win over Missouri, the Mallards outscored their opponents 14-4 in back-to-back home games. Quad City has won six of its last eight games.
The Mallards (20-12-2) were held scoreless until a 4-on-4 situation at the end of the first period gave their skilled skaters extra room to operate. Rookie F Lanny Gare raced up the left side and scored an unassisted goal, followed just 17 seconds later by a steal by D Tom Menicci, a pass to a wide open C Patrick Nadeau in the right circle, and a perfect feed across the crease to rookie F Marty Goulet, who scored for a 2-0 first intermission advantage.
Early in the second, F Bob Crummer's knock-in of a carom shot off the end boards by D Andy Fermoyle made it 3-0 and sent Rockford G Ronnie Vogel to the bench. But backup G Paul Schonfelder could do little to slow the Mallards, who got a pair of goals in a 1:29 span before the eight-minute mark of the period. C Jon Francisco one-timed D Jason Cannon's feed for a 4-0 lead, then C Martin Hlinka's back-door shot made it 5-0. Three fights spiced up the rest of the period, involving Crummer, newcomer Brad Essex, and Dylan Mills.
After the IceHogs got a pair of third-period power play goals to close within 5-2, Mills nailed a rebound to make it 6-2. He then joined Rockford's Steve Cygan in the penalty box to set up another 4-on-4, leading to the final two goals, scored by RW Jason Sessa and by Francisco, who got his second of the night.
The Mallards visit Kalamazoo Wednesday (6:00 p.m.) and Rockford Friday (7:05 p.m.) before Saturday's chance to Meet Baseball Great Tommy John when the Ducks host their archrivals, the Flint Generals, at 7:00 p.m. Fans will compete for free airline tickets in the AirTran Dancing for Destinations contest.
