Mallards Overcome Rush in Shootout, Claim Fourth Straight Win

February 15, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. - Jeff Lee scored the only shootout goal and Ty Rimmer was perfect against seven Rapid City Rush penalty shots after making 32 saves in regulation and overtime as the host Quad City Mallards defeated the Rush 4-3 in the shootout Saturday night. The victory extended the Mallards' (23-11-8, 54 points) winning streak to four games while the shootout loss- for which the Rush did earn one point- left Rapid City (28-18-1, 57 points) winless (0-5-1) in six games.

The Mallards and Rush combined to go 0-for-13 in the shootout before Lee roofed the game winner in round seven.

Rapid City's Scott Brannon had forced overtime- and, as it proved, the shootout- by pouncing on a rebound with just 2:23 left in regulation. The Mallards carried the lead deep into the third period after Nicholas Rioux snapped a 2-2 deadlock from the high slot at 9:37 of the third.

Brannon's late goal was the second Rapid City equalizer in as many periods. In response to Mike Stinziani burying a rebound to give the Mallards a 2-1 lead at 3:26 of the second period, the Rush knotted the score at two with Eric Giosa's tip-in at 15:44 of the second.

It was the Rush who had first jumped in front just 23 seconds into the game when Konrad Reeder swept the puck home from the slot. Thomas Frazee tied the game at one with a power play blast from the right wing circle at 8:08 of the first period.

The Mallards visit the Missouri Mavericks tomorrow before returning home for a rematch with the Mavericks next Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Next Wednesday's tilt is a Winning Wednesday presented by T.G.I.
